Combination of innovative financing, green technology and renewable energy for remote areas in Central Asia

UNDP Green Villages Initiative is combining innovative financing methods, usage of sustainable natural resources and promotion of green technology to bring energy and comfort to rural areas of Central Asia.

The initiative is addressing one of the most acute problems in rural areas in Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic which are electricity shortages during winter, high unemployment rates, gender inequality, severe deforestation problems and poverty in rural areas. High renewable energy potential and experiences of local population in using local materials are a good starting point to explore suitable, tailor-made solutions in order to improve the energy-poverty situation in rural areas.

The main idea is to demonstrate how green energy, being systematically implemented, can stimulate business environments, generate opportunities for rural development and create jobs.

The solution consists of a number of essential components, including:

Implementation of applicable and tested sustainable energy solutions

Replication in other rural villages to create market conditions for green technologies based on experiences in Croatia.

Innovative financing and business models

The technologies include decentralized solutions, with a focus on those that can be produced, operated and maintained locally.

The project was initiated in January 2014 by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Istanbul Regional Hub which targeted communities in several villages across all regions in Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic. Project implementation is supported by local organizations specialized in green energy business and technologies.

The Green Villages included in the project should serve as a new role model for the Central Asia region.
